Nankat Wellness & Resilience Center

Land is an essential component to Movement building, healing, social justice, and the cultivation of regenerative economies. There is a severe lack of safe, accessible, and land-based community spaces in Alaska. Centers that provide authentic, culturally sensitive, inter-generational and comfortable space to share land-based learnings are few and often financially inaccessible to community groups or those with limited income. Recently, Native Movement acquired 160 acres on the traditional homelands of the Lower Tanana Dene peoples. Guided by prayer, love, and determination - this center is an incredible fruition of revolutionary seeds planted years ago!

Nankat means "on the land" in the Gwich'in language; in this way we honor our roots as Native Movement was founded in Gwich'in territory.

"This is a space for our communities to put into practice regenerative ways of being -- learning, healing, innovation, and strategizing."
- Princess Johnson, board president

This land-based Center will consist of communal gathering spaces, communal kitchen space, both short and long-term living units, as well as multiple spaces for art, healing, and ceremony. The majority of the land base will remain undeveloped and maintained with Indigenous science/management as a healthy and functioning ecosystem. Portions of the land will be used for large or medium scaled agriculture, again utilizing Indigenous knowledge and permaculture practices for far north experimentation and learning. This will be a place to tend to seed, grow and harvest plant medicine, build, and to expand upon the lessons of our Elders.

We need your Support!

The Nankat Center requires multiple renovations, improvements, and set-up costs for us to be able to take advantage of this exciting opportunity. We have purchased a 50-ft yurt as our primary meeting space on site, as well as a few other smaller yurts to add to the room numbers at the center. We are also in the process of setting up a commercial kitchen and furnishing the current three living spaces.

We are so grateful for your contribution directly to the development and security of the Center -- any and all amounts will help. Donate Here
