Alaska Native Corporate Shareholder Empowerment Panel
On October 16th, Native Movement held a panel discussion on Alaska Native corporate shareholder empowerment, where panelists MacKenzie Englishoe, Chloey Cavanaugh, Amanda Bremner, Marry Knutsen, and David Leslie spoke about making change within shareholders' regional corporations. Panelists spoke about corporate accountability and how to get involved in change-making within corporations.
“I think we all want the same core things as shareholders: we want to protect the land, we want to protect the language, we want to continue our culture in any way that we can, and make sure the next generation has more sustainable opportunities than we did- because we have the choice to decide that.”
-MacKenzie Englishoe on how to identify and connect with other shareholders who share your values and concerns.

Native Movement Deputy Director Amanda Bremner led the discussion, asking panelists questions on how to approach our leaders about accountability and continuing to nourish relationships with one another.
“How do we know what to fix if it’s not brought to us? How do we know what to fix if our corporation won’t sit with us in it?…” “… It’s naming what their fears are, what are their fears if people know they messed up? What are their fears if they maybe made a bad decision? What are their fears around losing community? Will we be a stronger community if we can just name what we are seeing?”
- Chloey Cavanaugh on how to approach our leaders about accountability, where it's coming from a place of love, not judgment.
